MPs call for all-party JS panel
Four senior members of parliament on Wednesday proposed forming an all-party parliamentary committee to find a solution to the Rohingya crisis and send Myanmar’s displaced people to their own country.
They also suggested the speaker to fix a day for discussions on the burning issue in parliament.
Speaking on point of order, Awami League parliament member Mohammad Nasim, Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president Hasanul Haq Inu and Bangladesh Tariqat Federation chairman Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari came up with the proposal.
Mohammad Nasim first raised the issue saying that the problem had not been solved yet though different foreign leaders, on their visit to Bangladesh, gave lip services as only three Rohingyas had so far returned to their country.
‘As the parliament session is going on, Mr Speaker, would you please fix a day for discussions on the Rohingya problem so that members of parliament from all parties can discuss ways to solve the problem?’ he said.
Nasim, also a presidium member of AL, said that a parliamentary body incorporating members from all parties could be formed, if needed, so that they could visit India, China and Myanmar to take necessary measures for resolving the crisis.
Supporting his proposal, Hasanul Haq Inu said that it was necessary to convey the views of the parliament members of the 11th parliament on the Rohingya issue to the country’s people and the international community.
‘A parliamentary party also can place a report in the House after visiting the United Nations. The Rohingya problem won’t be resolved without a tripartite initiative from Bangladesh, United Nations and Myanmar as it’s an international issue,’ Inu said.
Rashed Khan Menon raised a question about the justification of the bilateral agreement signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar over sending the Rohingyas to their homeland.
He also said that the foreign friends of Bangladesh had done their politics over the Rohingya issue instead of making genuine efforts to overcome it.
‘The prime minister has brightened the country’s image by giving the Rohingyas shelter in Bangladesh. This problem, however, can’t persist for a long time,’ he also said.
Later, Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari proposed the formation of an all-party parliamentary body to work out an effective plan to resolve the crisis.
