Deaths in Thakurgaon firing ‘unexpected’: BGB chief

Director general of the Border Guard Bangladesh Major General Md Shafeenul Islam on Monday described the killings of three people in firing by the paramilitary force members at Bahrampur in Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon as ‘unexpected’.
He came up with the remark while speaking at a press conference at Thakurgaon Circuit House in the afternoon.
The BGB chief also said all, including his force members and locals, would have to remain alert to avert the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
The BGB had formed a high-level five-member committee, headed by its additional director general Brigadier General Sazzad Hossain, to look into the incident and the committee was asked to submit its report as soon as possible, he said.
The director general also said that further action would be taken after receiving the report.
Shafeenul Islam also talked to three local union parishad members and six residents but refrained from visiting the place of occurrence.
Senior BGB officials Brigadier Khandaker Farid Hasan and Colonel Matiur Rahman, BGB Thakurgaon sector commander Colonel Shamsul Arefin, commanding officer of BGB-50 Battalion in Thakurgaon Lieutenant Colonel Tuhin Mohammad Masud, Thakurgaon deputy commissioner AKM Quamruzzaman Selim and superintendent of police Mohammad Moniruzzaman were present at the press conference.
On February 12, three people were killed and at least 16 others injured after BGB members opened fire during a clash with villagers at village Bahrampur in Haripur upazila.
