Nomination submission continues
Many potential candidates have submitted nomination papers to the election committee for holding Dhaka Dhaka University Central Students’ Union and hall union election scheduled for March 11.
Till Tuesday nine platforms announced panels and candidacy to contest the elections. These are Bangladesh Chhatra League, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Progressive Students’ Alliance, Students’ Unity against Imperialism, Bangladesh Chhatra League (Jasad), Bangladesh Chhatra League (Jasad Ambia), Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri, Students’ Rights Protection Council and newly formed Independent Alliance, confirms the election committee.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University Journalists’ Association president Asifur Rahman submitted nomination form for vying for general secretary post as an independent candidate.
Chief returning officer SM Mahfuzur Rahman said a total of 237 candidates submitted nominations forms to vie for 25 posts in the central students’ union while 593 nomination forms submitted for 13 posts each in 18 halls of the university.
He further said that according to the election schedule, candidates would be allowed to withdraw their nomination forms by 2 March, while the final list of the candidates would be published on March 3 and final electoral roll would be published on March 5.
Meanwhile, a rebel group of Chhatra League, who also vowed to take part in the election forming a separate panel, scrapped its decision following a meeting with the Awami League leaders at the party office in Dhaka on Monday night.
Sohan Khan, who wanted to vie for vice-president position from the faction, told reporters at a briefing that they held a meeting with the central leaders of the party and decided to work for the panel with prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s blessings.
AL leaders Jahangir Kabir Nanak, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Delowar Hossain, Biplab Barua and others were present at the meeting.
