Obaidul Quader in critical condition

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader was in a critical condition at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital where he was admitted Sunday morning with cardiac complication.
His doctors said that Obaidul Quader, also road transport and brides minister, could not be taken abroad for better treatment because of critical health condition at the moment.
University vice-chancellor Kanak Kanti Barua, also the head of the medical board formed for Quader’s treatment, told reporters that an angiogram detected three blockages in his coronary artery.
A blockage was removed by stenting, he said at about noon. 
At about 5:00pm, doctors, including Kanak and cardiology department head Syed Ali Ahsan, said that Quader’s condition was still critical.
‘As he is on ventilation, we can call that he is in danger,’ said Syed Ali Ahsan.
‘He will be under observation for 24-72 hours. Before that, we can’t say anything for sure,’ he added.
A four-member medical team from Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore arrived at the university at about 7:45pm to treat Obaidul Quader.
At about 9:30pm, Kanak told reporters that upon consultation with the Singapore doctors, they decided not to send Obaidul Quader to Singapore at this moment.
‘His condition is improving. So he is not being flown to Singapore at this moment,’ he said.
Obaidul Quader was admitted to the hospital at about 8:30am as he felt breathing complication in the morning.
President Md Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina visited him at the hospital in the afternoon after the government preparation to shift Quader to Singapore for better treatment was held up.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited Obaidul Quader at the hospital in the evening.
Syed Ali Ahsan said that Obaidul Quader was not in a condition of shifting abroad.
‘If he is moved anywhere else, his condition might deteriorate,’ he said.
According to him, Obaidul Quader’s right coronary has a 100 per cent blockage. There are two more blockage — one 80 per cent and the other 99 per cent.
He said that Obaidul Quader had uncontrolled diabetes and electrolyte imbalance. His blood pressure was unstable.
The cardiologist said that Obaidul Quader responded slightly opening his eyes when president and prime minister visited him in the afternoon.
‘We’re optimistic about the recovery of Obaidul Quader but he’s not out of danger. It’s a matter of time,’ he said.
‘If his condition remains stable, we’ll go for a bypass surgery. He’s now in critical condition,’ he added.
Replying to a query, Kanak Kanti Barua said, ‘Prime minister Sheikh Hasina told us that the ailing minister would be taken abroad for better treatment with the consent of the physicians.’
Asked about the arrival of a Singapore medical team, he said, ‘It’ll be monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office. We’ll allow Obaidul Quader to go to Singapore if we see there is adequate manpower and expertise in the team.’
The Singapore medical team from was Mount Elizabeth Hospital, said the university hospital director Brigadier General Abdullah Al Harun.
Ruling Awami League leaders and activists poured into the hospital complex to see Obaidul Quader.
Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam was heard to tell the activists that Sheikh Hasina requested the party activists not gather the hospital as that might impede hospital activities.
