Only Patuakhali DC sent river grabbers’ list to NRCC

Patuakhali deputy commissioner alone sent river grabbers’ list to the National River Conservation Commission.
None of the 63 other DCs complied with the NRCC’s request to send the list of grabbers of rivers in the districts by February 28.
In Patuakhali 602 persons grabbed 25 rivers including Agunmukha, Payra, Lohalia and Tetulia.
‘Names of the grabbers will be made public after verification,’ NRCC chairman Muzibur Rahman Howlader told New Age on Sunday.
‘We also got the list of 65 river grabbers from the Savar uapzila nirbabi officer,’ he said.
On February 4, the NRCC chairman requested the deputy commissioners to send the list of grabbers of rivers, canals and water bodies in their districts.
The NRCC chairman also asked the DCs to display the grabbers’ lists on notice boards in their offices
and post them on their
official websites as directed by the High Court Division in its verdict dated
February 3.
The NRCC chairman also asked the DCs to send time-bound action plans for dismantling all illegal structures from the banks of rivers, canals and water bodies.
The High Court Division in the verdict also disqualified the grabbers from contesting elections or borrowing from banks.
Four DCs told New Age that they had prepared the list of grabbers in their districts.
Munshiganj DC Sayla Farzana said that her office already sent a list of river grabbers to the local government division.
‘And soon we will send a copy of the list to the NRCC,’ she said.
Bogura DC Faiz Ahmed said, ‘We already posted the list of 30 grabbers of the Karotawa with their names on the website of the district administration.’
‘We sent the names of the grabbers in Bogura to the NRCC a month ago. I don’t know why they did not get it,’ he said.
Cumilla DC M Abul Fazal Mir said that he had sent the list of grabbers in his district to the NRCC on February 28.
Chattogram DC Mohammad Elias Hossain said that more time was needed to complete the list of grabbers since Chattogram was a big district.
The NRCC chairman said that the non-compliant DCs would be given verbal reminders on the issue and that he would inform the Cabinet Division about the non-compliant DCs .
