UZ Polls: Voting suspended at three centres, two officials held

Voting in three polling centres of Sirajganj and Habiganj was suspended on Sunday over allegations of irregularities and snatching of ballot papers.

In Sirajganj, authorities concerned have postponed voting at Mahmudpur Government Primary School centre under ward no 1 in Sadar municipality following allegations of irregularities, reports our correspondent.

District election officer Abul Hossain said returning officer Firoze Mahmud, additional district administrator, declared the postponement of voting in the centre at around 2:00am on Sunday.

Following a written complaint by the presiding officer Anwar Hossain, district returning officer Abdul Hossain and executive magistrate Mohammad Rahmat Ullah visited the centre and suspended voting.

In Habiganj, voting in a polling station of Azmirigang upazila was suspended for snatching ballot papers by some miscreants, reports United News of Bangladesh.

Presiding officer Mohitush Sutradhar, said that around 100 people attacked Paschimbag Government School polling centre and snatched 163 ballot papers.

Later, the authorities suspended voting.

Besides, voting in Shahpur government Primary School centre was suspended in Baniachong upazila following an attack at around 11:00am.

Six people, including presiding officer Jahir Alam, police constable Jamal uddin, ansar member Abdur Malek were injured in the attack, said Baniachong upazila nirbahi officer Md MamunK handaker.

Voting in the first phase elections to 78 Upazila Parishads in 12 districts began at 8:00am on Sunday which would continue till 4:00pm without any break.
