Nurul Huq elected DUCSU VP, Golam Rabbani GS

Nurul Huq Nur of Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakshan Parishad was elected as the vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union while Golam Rabbani and Saddam Hossain of Bangladesh Chhatra League were elected as general secretary and assistant general secretary respectively in the Monday’s elections.
Dhaka University vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman announced the results at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban at about 3:20am on Tuesday amid protests by ruling Awami League-backed student body Chhatra League activists.
Nurul Huq polled 11,062 votes while his nearest contestant Chhatra League leader Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon bagged 9,129 votes.
English department student Nurul is also joint convener of Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakshan Parishad, which led protests for reforms in the quota system in government jobs in 2018.
Akhter Hossain of quota reform protesters’ panel was elected as the social welfare affairs secretary.
Chhatra League bagged 23 of the 25 positions in DUCSU.
The other winners from Chhatra League are liberation war secretary Saad bin Kader, science and technology secretary Arif Ibn Ali, common room and cafeteria secretary BM Lipi Akter, international affairs secretary Shahrima Tanjima Arni, literature secretary Mazharul Kabir Shawon, cultural secretary Asif Talukder, sports secretary Shakil Ahmed Tanvir and students’ transport secretary Shams e Noman.
The 13 elected members are Yashio Sangma Chibol, Nazrul Islam, Rakibul Hasan, Rakibul Islam Oitijjo, Tanvir Hasan Saikot, Raisa Naser, Sabrina Eti, Nipu Islam Tanni, Saiful islam Rasel, Tilottama Sikder, Farida Parvin, Mahmudul Hasan and Md Rafiqul Islam Sabuj.
Most of the contesting panels on Monday boycotted midway through the long-awaited elections to the Dhaka University Students’ Union and hall unions marred by allegations of attacks on contestants, ballot stuffing, obstacles in the queues and administrative failure.
Chhatra League won elections to hall students’ unions at 14 halls while independent candidates won the polls at the rest four, all female halls except Ruqayyah Hall.
At Shamsunnahar Hall, independent candidates got eight positions, including vice-president Tasnim Afroz and general secretary Afsana Safa while Chhatra League bagged the rest five.
At Sufia Kamal Hall, independent candidates Tanjina Shuma and Monira Sharmin were elected as vice-president and general secretary respectively.
At Ruqayyah Hall, Chhatra League won 10 positions, including vice-president Israt Jahan Tonni and general secretary Sayma Promi.
At Salimullah Muslim Hall, full panel of Chhatra League, including vice-president Mujahid Kamal Uddin and general secretary Julias Cizar, won the polls.
At Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, independent candidates Sushmita Dey and Sahgupta Bushra were elected as vice-president and general secretary respectively.
At Jagannath Hall, Chhatra League won all the 13 positions, including vice-president Utpal Biswas and general secretary Kajal Das.
At Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, independent candidates won all but two positions, including vice-president Riki Haidar Asha. Chhatra League’s Sara Binte Jamal was elected as general secretary. Its candidate also won the position of cultural secretary.
At Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, Chhatra League won all the 13 positions, including vice-president Shariful Islam Shakil and general secretary Hasibul Hossain Shanto.
At Amar Ekushey Hall, independent candidate Mehedi Hasan Sumon was elected as vice-president while Chhatra League won the rest 12 positions, including general secretary Ahsan Habib.
At Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Chhatra League won all positions, including vice-president Akmal Hossain and general secretary Mehedi Hasan Shanto.
At Haji Mohammad Mohsin Hall, Chhatra League won all positions, including vice-president Shahidul Huq Shishir and general secretary Mehedi Hasan Mizan.
At Kabi Jasimuddin Hall, Chhatra League got all positions, including vice-president Forhad Ali and general secretary Imam Hasan.
At Sir AF Rahman Hall, Chhatra League bagged all positions, including vice-president Alim Khan and general secretary Abdur Rahim.
At Bijoy Ekattor Hall, Chhatra League won all positions, including vice-president Sajibur Rahman and general secretary Najmul Hasan.
At Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall, Chhatra League woun all positions, including vice-president Hossain Ahmad Sohan and general secretary Irfanul High Sourov.
Al Zahurul Haq Hall, Chhatra League’s Saifullah Abbasi Anonto was elected as vice-president while independent candidate Toufiqul Islam was elected as general secretary.
At Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall, independent candidate Mahmudul Hasan Tomal was elected as vice-president while Chhatra League’s Mahfuzur Rahman was elected as general secretary.
