Police ‘insist’ on changing complaint relating to wife

Family members and colleagues of dentist Rajan Karmakar, who was brought dead to a private hospital early Sunday by his surgeon wife, alleged on Monday that cops insisted on changing statement in their complaint that the wife had injured him in the past.
The colleagues said the police, however, received their complaint without not giving its registration number, raising further doubt if the investigation would be fair.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University oral and maxillofacial assistant professor Rajan Karmakar was brought to the Square Hospital after 3:30am from their rented house on Indira Road in Dhaka on the flag-car of the food minister and was declared ‘brought dead’ at the hospital at about 4:00am.
Rajan’s wife Krisna Rani Majumder is a surgeon at the general surgery department of the university and one of the four children of food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder.
Rajan’s fellows and colleagues brought the body to the university in the afternoon and later the body was taken to Noakhali for cremation.
At the university, his colleagues vented anger and demanded justice, chanting slogan, ‘We want justice for Rajan’. 
University assistant proctor Ahsan Habib Helal alleged that they along with Rajan’s uncle Sujon Karmakar approached the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on Sunday with a complaint, but two police officers started insisting on changing the sentences where Rajana’s uncle wrote that his nephew was injured following their marriage.
‘I gave the account of how he was injured that led Rajan to get into the ICU. But, the police officials made delay and continue to insist on changing the the sentences,’ Ahsan Habib said.
‘They received it, but did not give us any number,’ said Ahsan Habib, adding, ‘on suspicion, we took the photo of what we had submitted.’
Police station duty officer sub-inspector Sujon Biswash and his deputy assistant sub-inspector Muhammad Ali said they were not sure if any case was registered over the death. 
A third official said no case was filed but they started formalities in connection with a general diary filed with the police station over the death. 
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station officer-in-charge inspector Jane Alam Munshi, however, claimed that they received a complaint and launched investigation into the death. 
‘As the part of the investigation, the post mortem examination was done,’ he said. 
He denied that his colleagues insisted Rajana’s family or colleagues on changing the complaint. 
In the complaint, Rajan’s uncle Sujon stated that his 40-year-old nephew used to live in the apartment on Indira Road. He wedded Krisna in February 2016.
‘Following the marriage, my nephew had been assaulted various ways,’ he said, adding that he came to know the sad news at about 4:30am on Sunday. 
He wrote, ‘The death of my nephew Rajan was not normal.’ 
On Monday, the post mortem was performed at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College.
A reporter Emon Rahman of Bangla Daily Desh Rupantor was assaulted by supporters of the food minister when he tried to take photo of their presence around the morgue during the post mortem examination. 
Emon told reporters that his phone was taken away and handed over to the Sher-e-Banglanagor police station inspector (investigation) Abul Kalam Azad, who asked the journalist to delete the photo. Abul Kalam said the phone was handed over to the journalist after removing the photos.
