Conspiracy on to kill Khaleda: Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday alleged that a conspiracy was on to ‘kill’ the party’s imprisoned chairperson Khaleda Zia in a planned manner as no medical treatment was being provided to the ailing former prime minister.
The secretary general at a news briefing at BNP’s central office cautioned that the jail authority and the government would have to take the responsibility if any harm was caused to Khaleda in jail.
Fakhrul said the jail authority was totally indifferent to the health of Khaleda who was sentenced to five years in jail in a graft case by a Dhaka special judge’s court on February 8, 2018 and sent to old Dhaka central jail on Nazimuddin Road.
Fakhrul said family members of Khaleda Zia who went to visit her on Tuesday found that her health condition further deteriorated.
He also added that he himself recently saw Khaleda in a court room and she could neither keep her head straight, nor bend her legs.
She (Khaleda) is not in a good health, Fakhrul emphasized and demanded immediate transfer of Khaleda to a hospital of her choice for proper treatment.
Fakhrul said the BNP chairperson was brought to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University hospital in October last year following an order issued by the High Court.
He alleged that she was taken back to the prison on November 8 without providing her treatment and without the permission of the medical board constituted for her treatment.
The BNP secretary general said in the last three and a half months from November 8 to February 24, no medical tests were done, nor any regular monitoring of the diseases of Khaleda was ensured.
Fakhrul said on February 24, at the directive of the court the medical board visited Khaleda Zia and recommended urgent blood tests but did not take any step to carry out the tests at that time.
After repeated requests, the medical board on March 19 sent medical staff for collecting her blood for examination at the BSMMU, he said, claiming that the medical board was yet to hold any meeting regarding the results of the blood tests and none of the jail authority and the board met with Khaleda to this end.
BNP leaders Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, AZM Zahid Hossain, Farhad Halim Donar, Sirajuddin Ahmed, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi , Munir Hossain and Belal Ahmed, among others, were present at the news briefing.
