DNCC Kitchen Market shop owners gauging damage

The shop owners of Dhaka North City Corporation Kitchen Market who lost their livelihood once again within less than two and a half years are gauging their damage on Sunday, a day after the fire burnt their market to ashes.
On Saturday, a devastated fire gutted the corrugated metal-roofed market when the DNCC authority relocated 211 shop owners who lost their shop in
2017.
Some shop owners of the market also auctioned their damaged goods in throwaway price while most of them could recover nothing from the ashes.
Meanwhile, the disaster and relief ministry has started distributing 30 kg rice for each of the staff of the shops.
On the first day, total 100 staff relieved rice but the shop owners said that they did not get anything from any one.
The frustrated businessmen said that if the government had plans to evict them from the market they would never be able to turn around and earn a livelihood as they have lost everything in double fire.
One of the victims Fakir Ahmed said that if the government could give them opportunities to start business immediately providing cash and space, businessmen would be benefited.
Samiya Varieties Store, a crockery and cosmetics shop, owner Rasel Rana said that the market committee gave them a form to list the amount of loss.
‘We are filling out the forms in the hope that any government of the agencies would compensate us,’ said Rasel, adding that the shop owners could not depend on the mayor’s or minster’s commitment as in 2017 they made the same promise but they received nothing.
The market association president Dil Mohammad said that no government agency has promised to extend its support yet to help the businessmen out.
He said that city corporation officials also did not contact them.
DNCC chief engineer Brig Gen Jubayet Salehin, also convener of the probe committee, said that they would visit the spot today (Monday) to find the source of the fire and gauge the damage the fire
caused.
‘We will give recommendations too,’ he said.
