Rajuk extends report submission time

Rajdhani Unyayan Kartripakkha on Tuesday extended the time for submission of an investigation report on unauthorised extension of FR Tower by three working days.
Rajuk on March 28 formed the five-member investigation committee and asked it to submit the report by Tuesday.
Rajuk chairman Md Abdur Rahman on Tuesday told New Age that the committee led by the agency’s director Waliur Rahman sought three more days as it could not finish the investigation on the scheduled time.
The chairman formed the committee to identify the deviations from the approved plan during the construction of the 23-storey building and to find out the people responsible for the gross irregularities within three working days.
The move was taken a few hours after a fire at FR Tower that killed 26 people, including a Sri Lankan and injured over 100 others injured.
A committee member preferring anonymity said they could not finish the task as Rupayan Group, which developed the building, did not handed over some required documents.
Housing minister SM Rezaul Karim on Sunday asked the Rajuk chairman to identify and take action against the officials who did nothing against unauthorised expansion of FR Tower although it was noticed in 2007.
Rajuk documents show land owner SMHI Faruque signed a contract with Rupayan Group to build an 18-storey building on eight katha plot, with 6,000 square feet space on each floor.
On February 23, 2005, FR Tower authorities submitted a photocopy of the building’s design showing 23 floors, Rajuk chairman Md Abdur Rahman said.
On Saturday, in a case with the Banani police station against the owners of the building and two of the accused, Tasvir Ul Islam and SMHI Faruque, who owned the land, were arrested on Saturday night and on early Sunday respectively.
A Dhaka court on Sunday granted police seven days to question them in police custody over the incident.
Housing ministry formed a separate committee that is scheduled to submit report on Thursday.
Fire Service and Civil Defence will submit another report to the home ministry today.
