25 DEPZ factories shut amid labour unrest

At least 25 garment factories at Dhaka Export Processing Zone at Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, were shut amid workers unrest on Wednesday.

The management of the factories shut their unit around 9:00 am when some 4,000 agitated workers of Talisman Ltd, a unit of FCI Group, pelted stones at the factories.

A number of workers said that the workers of Talisman demonstrated on Tuesday to press their demands, including attendance bonus hike from Tk 300 to Tk 500, yearly wage increment based on gross wage, stopping harassment of workers and suspension of one of their top officials as he assaults workers.

The workers in the morning went to the factory and again started a demonstration as the management of the factory did not pay heed to their demands.

Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority general manager (PR) Nazma Binte Alamgir said that to avoid any untoward incident Talisman was declared shut for an indefinite period while others for the day.
