25 shops burnt in Khilgaon fire

At least 25 shops were burnt in a fire that broke out at two markets in the city’s Khilgaon area on early Thursday.

Deputy assistant director Kazi Najimozzaman of Fire Service and Civil Defence said that the fire broke out at Khilgaon City Corporation Market around 3:15am and engulfed the adjoining Pubali Shopping Market in the area.

On information, 15 firefighting units went to the spot and extinguished the blaze at around 5:35am.

The origin of the fire could not be known immediately.

There were three markets— Khilgaon City Corporation, Pubali Shopping Centre and Uttara Market— in the area housed a total of 1,335 shops, said Najimozzaman adding that the fire came under control at around 5:00am and fully doused around 5:35am.

‘Due to the prompt action taken by the firefighting units, the fire could not spread,’ he added.
