BNP briefs foreign diplomats
Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday briefed foreign diplomats stationed in Dhaka about the country’s latest situation and some other issues, including party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health condition and the recent upazila polls.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other senior leaders of the party apprised the diplomats of the party’s observations on the issues at a closed-door meeting at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in the afternoon.
There was no formal briefing from either side about the meeting.
Diplomats from different countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, Morocco, Japan, China, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Myanmar and Palestine, attended the nearly one and half hours long meeting that began at about 4:30pm.
Apart from Fakhrul, BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, vice-chairpersons Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and chairperson’s adviser Sabihuddin Ahmed were, among others, present at the meeting.
While talking to reporters after the meeting, Gayeshwar said that the meeting was held as part of their regular interaction with diplomats.
‘We used to hold such meetings every month,’ he said.
He said that they had talked about the country’s latest political situation.
‘The issue of Khaleda’s sickness and release from jail also came up for discussion,’ he said.
A BNP leader, who was present at the meeting and wished for anonymity, said that they had talked about the current political situation after the December-30 election and people’s ‘poor’ response to the recent city and upazila elections.
He said that their party leaders had also briefed the diplomats about how the government was obstructing Khaleda Zia’s release and depriving her of proper treatment.
