PM asks DCs to keep families at districts

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday asked the deputy commissioners to keep their family in the respective district.
Public servants unwilling to go by the directive must not be appointed to the vital office in the field administration, she told a meeting of the executive committee of the National Economic Council at the Planning Commission, said officials attending the meeting.
They said that ‘poor’ standard of education in districts was discussed in the meeting and led the prime minister to issue the directive as most deputy commissioners usually left the family in Dhaka for education of their children while posted in districts.
It was pointed out in the meeting that unlike in the past, the deputy commissioners nowadays did not like to send their children to schools in the districts, even the zila schools in the district headquarters, which had a glorious past.
Most of the deputy commissioners now prefer to keep their family in the capital for ‘better schooling’ of their children, said the officials.
Recalling the glorious history of education in the districts, Hasina noted that even many officers of the Central Superior Services of Pakistan were hailed from districts.
She lamented that programmes at educational institutes in the districts lost most of their previous charm because of less presence of children of the government officials.
The prime minister said that adequate open space in addition to facilities like ventilation, balcony and fire prevention must be ensured while constructing public buildings.
She said ponds and water body could no way be destroyed as fire fighters faced shortage of water during fire incidents in the capital.
On April 1, the prime minister issued a set of directives, including provision for annual renewal of fire safety licenses for all commercial and industrial buildings, at a cabinet meeting.
She came up with the directives against the backdrop of the fire at 23-storey FR Tower at Banani in Dhaka on March 28 that killed 26 people and injured about 100 others.
The prime minister’s directives issued on Tuesday included avoiding acquisition of agricultural land for development projects and discarding the practice of acquiring extra land for the projects, the officials said
She reiterated that regular dredging to be done to keep the navigability of the waterway and check river erosion.
