Rajshahi IHT shut over BCL infighting

The Rajshahi Institute of Health Technology authority on Tuesday closed the institute for an indefinite period following a clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling Awami League, centring sale of human skeleton.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the academic council on Tuesday evening, said a notice singed by the institute’s principal Farhana Haque.
All the classes and examinations of the institution were suspended for indefinite period to avert any untoward incident on the campus.
The male students were asked to leave their halls of residence by 8:00pm on Tuesday while the female students were asked to leave the halls by 10:00am Wednesday.
The BSc examinations under Rasjshahi Medical Collage would continue as per schedule, the notice read.
No comment was available from the Chhatra League and the institute authority as they did receive phone calls.
Earlier on Tuesday, supporters of IHT unit Chhatra League president Aslam Sarker and general secretary Ohiduzzaman locked in a violent clash on the campus following a dispute over skeleton sale, leaving 11 leaders and activists injured.
Campus sources said, three students, who were followers of IHT unit Chhatgra League general secretary Wahiduzzaman, had an altercation with a first year student named Saiful Islam, who was also a supporter of BCL president Aslam Sarkar, at the institute’s gallery 2 over selling human skeleton.
Later, they went to BCL president Aslam Sarkar to settle down the dispute.
At a stage of conversation, both of the groups engaged in a clash suddenly, leaving 11 BCL leaders and activists were injured.
Police later rushed the spot, brought the situation under control, and recovered various locally made weapons and bamboo sticks, said Rajpara police station officer-in-charge Hafizur Rahaman.
He said that two separate cases were filed over the incident with Rajpara police and they were looking into it.
