High Court hears Jahalam on April 17
The High Court Division will on April 17 hear 32-year old Jahalam, a victim of wrongful arrest and detention for three years in 33 corruption cases in which he was not at all involved.
On Wednesday, a bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader requested Jahalam to be present at the next hearing to tell the court how he was passing his days.
The hearing was adjourned until April 17.
Earlier, in a suo moto ruling the bench had asked the government and the ACC to explain why they would not be directed to pay compensation to Jahalam as he lost his job as a jute mill worker after the ACC unlawfully arrested him falsely implication him in 33 cases and detained him in the jail.
Jahalam was falsely implicated in the cases of misappropriation of money of state run Sonali Bank though the real perpetrator Abu Saleq an employee of the Election Commission’s National ID Card wing has been absconding.
On the night of February 3, Jahalam was set free on orders from the High Court Division, after the National Human Rights Commission exposed the gross miscarriage of justice.
The ACC filed 33 cases against Jahaalam while real culprit Abu Saleq is hiding in India after misappropriating Sonali Bank’s money using Jahalam’s National Identity Card number.
Saleq opened bank accounts using Jahalam’s NID Card number and misappropriated the money.
Abu Saleq used his accounts with 33 branches of 18 banks to en-cash Sonali Bank cheques he had issued in his favour.
