Avijit murder accused Farabi cleared of charges of threatening freethinkers

The country’s lone Cyber Tribunal on Wednesday acquitted Shafiur Rahman Farabi as the prosecution failed to establish any allegation against him over a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act in 2015 for his post threatening a number of freethinkers.
Farabi is one of the accused in Blogger Avijit Roy Murder case.
Cyber Tribunal judge Ash Shams Jaglul Hossain handed down the verdict in presence of Farabi, a dropout physics student of Chittagong University. 
He reportedly threatened an imam who had led blogger Ahmed Rajib Haidar’s first namaz-e-janaza in February 2013.
Farabi used to spread hate speech until his arrest. 
According to the case details, the case was filed against him alleging that he threatened different important persons using social media platforms. 
He also threatened Bangladesh Pratidin editor Naem Nizam for publishing an article of exiled writer Taslima Nasrin.
Detective branch of police inspector Fazlur Rahman filed the case with Ramna police station on March 14, 2015 under the Information and Communications Technology Act for spreading hate speech on social media. 
On November 30, 2015, the police pressed charge-sheet against him. The court framed charges against him on April 5, 2016 while seven prosecution witnesses testified before the court.
Farabi had also threatened an online shopping portal to remove Avijit’s books.
The police investigators said he tried to join Hizb-ut Tahrir in 2010.
The Rapid Action Battalion team arrested Farabi on March 2 at Jatarabari in Dhaka in 2015.
