Southeast people continue to suffer
People of different waterlogged areas of the south-eastern part of the country continued to suffer as their homesteads, crops and roads were still under water on Tuesday while water began to recede from some places and the situation remained unchanged at some other places.
Reports received from many districts of the remaining part of the country said that the incessant rain for the past few days also caused waterlogging in the areas and affected roads and waste management in different towns and cities.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of Bangladesh Water Development Board forecasted that the flood situation in some areas of Feni, Bandarban, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar districts might improve in next 24 hours from Tuesday morning.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department at 6:00pm on Tuesday forecasted heavy to very heavy rain falls at places over Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions and moderately heavy falls at places elsewhere across the country.
The met office recorded 104 millimetres of rain in Cox’s Bazaar as the highest rainfall in the country in 24 hours ending 6:00pm on Tuesday. It recorded 89mm rain in Teknaf and 29mm in Chittagong.
New Age correspondent in Cox’s Bazar reported that the flood situation remained unchanged in the district and stormy wind was blowing over the districts after evening.
At least 50,000 houses in the district were waterlogged and the water, at places, reached the roofs of the houses.
New Age correspondent in Noakhali reported that the continuous rainfall in the past few days inundated nine upazilas of the district, damaged 400 hectares of seedbeds of Aman paddy and washed away fisheries farms.
Thousands of families of 50 villages of Subarnachar upazila remained waterlogged on Tuesday while many schools remained closed as the floors and paths remained under water.
At Noakhali sadar upazila almost all the streets went under knee-deep water, locals said.
New Age correspondent in Feni reported that the flood situation developed as the water had been flashing out through regulators but the people of at least 50 affected villages were been facing untold sufferings.
Reports received from Bandarban said that the flood situation remained almost static in the district while the administration had taken initiatives to send relief materials in remote hilly areas of Thanchi upazila by helicopter.
New Age correspondent in Khulna reported that students of most of the academic institutions of Khulna city had to wade through knee to waist-deep water for attending their classes as they remained waterlogged.
New Age correspondent in Rajshahi reported that rain sent many roads of Rajshahi city under water as the drains were almost full with solid garbage. Rajshahi City Corporation officials said that over 40 per cent solid wastes of the city were dumped into drains, open spaces and water bodies, causing blockage of drainage system.
New Age correspondent in Munshiganj reported that the authorities had suspended movement of small launches, sea-boats and engine-boats on Shimulia-Kaorakandi route on river Padma due to rough weather.
