Eminent citizens ask govt to bring ex-OC Moazzem to book

Eminent citizens of the country have demanded immediate government actions against former officer-in-charge of Sonagazi police station Moazzem Hossain of Feni for his alleged breach of job rules and committing criminal offences over the case on sexual assault and fire attack on the deceased madrassah girl Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
The government should immediately initiate framing charges against Moazzem who not only spread misleading information but also appeared to have assisted the accused in the cases filed by Nusrat’s family against her madrassah principal and others, they said.
Talking to New Age on Tuesday, they said that they were surprised over the silence of the government as well as the police department over taking any legal action against the police officer in this regard.
Dhaka University emeritus professor Serajul Islam Choudhury said that the government should take exemplary action against the police officer to ensure justice for Nusrat Jahan’s killing.
Moazzem’s conduct indicates that in most cases police behave in similar ways with those who go to them for justice, he observed.
‘Police were illegally trying to protect the accused,’ he said, adding that people were deprived of justice as they experienced injustice at police stations, he added.
Rights activist Sultana Kamal said that the police officer had committed criminal offences and violated his job rules and discipline by humiliating the victim and taking a stand to protect the accused by providing misleading information.
Moazzem should be punished as Nusrat had fought for justice by giving her life her life, she added.
She further said that the government should also ensure justice for the murder of Sohagi Jahan Tonu alongside the justice for Nusrat murder.
Cultural activist Nasiruddin Yousuff viewed that the government should lodge specific complaints against the OC, saying that closing a police official was just a primary departmental step.
The rule-barkers would be encouraged by the incident if the OC was not punished according to the regular laws, he went on.
Nijera Kori coordinator Khushi Kabir said that the expected level of government role for taking action against the OC was still not there.
The delay in taking action by the government, she observed, is unexpected as the reactions to the Feni incident has already spread across the country.
‘Development of women in the economic field is nothing if the government fails to ensure their security,’ she emphasised.
Bangladesh Nari Sangbadik Kendra president Nasimun Ara Haq Minu said that the OC did not cooperate with the victim’s family because of his greed for illegal benefits from the accused in the cases.
She said that the mere departmental action announced against the OC was not enough as the police department usually announces such steps against delinquent police officials.
Nusrat was an Alim examinee from Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa who came to the exam hall on April 6 morning when she was set afire as she refused to withdraw the accusation she had made against her madrassah principal Siraj-ud-Doula of harassing her sexually.
She struggled for her life in the next three days and finally lost the battle at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10.
The OC allegedly tried to divert the by saying, among other ways, that the fire incident was an attempt at suicide.
On Monday, a Supreme Court lawyer lodged a case against the Moazzem with the Cyber Tribunal for spreading Nusrat Jahan Rafi’s video statement on digital platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, captured by the OC.
He was later withdrawn from his post following Nusrat’s death on charge of his noncooperation with the victim’s family.
