NUSRAT MURDER Sonagazi AL chief placed on remand
A court in Feni on Saturday recorded statements of Kamrun Nahar Moni and Javed Hossain, two more accused in the case of murdering Sonagazi Islamia Fazil Madrassah student Nusrat Jahan Rafi by setting her on fire.
Both Moni and Javed were classmates of Nusrat,18.
The Police Bureau of Investigation seized a burqa worn by a male assailant who took part in setting fire to Nusrat on April 6.
The Feni court also placed the Sonagazi upazila unit of ruling Awami League president Ruhul Amin on five-day remand with the Police Bureau of Investigation for interrogations.
Different organizations in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country continued protests on Saturday demanding justice for Nusrat’s family and speedy trial of the offenders.
The Sonagazi upazila AL chief, arrested by Police Bureau of Investigation at Sonagazi Friday afternoon, was produced before the court of senior judicial magistrate Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Saturday afternoon seeking a seven -day remand but the court allowed the PBI to take him on remand for five days, said PBI inspector and investigation officer of the case Md Shah Alam.
He said that they have produced two other accused – Kamrun Nahar Moni and Javed Hossain, both Alim examinees of the madrassah and classmates of Nusrat in the same court which recorded their statements.
Earlier, the PBI inspector said that Javed and Moni were among the five who directly took part in setting fire to Nusrat.
Moni and Javed appeared in their exams after setting fire to Nusrat after bringing her from the exam hall on instruction from principal Siraj-ud-Doula.
But Nusrat could not appear in Arabic first paper exam for which she had come to the exam hall with her brother as another classmate Popy took her to the roof of the madrassah to murder her by setting her on fire.
PBI special police superintendent for Chattogram division Md Iqbal told reporters on the Feni court premises that Moni had bought the burqas for the male assailants to wear.
Moni, pregnant for five months, threw Nusrat on the roof and tied her legs and Javed doused Nusrat with kerosene before setting her on fire, he said.
Until now, seven accused narrated their role in committing the crime in their statements in the court, said the PBI special SP.
Five others who confessed their involvement in committing the crime are Nur Uddin, Shahadot Hossain Shamim, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Hafez Abdul Kader and Umme Sultana Popy.
On Saturday afternoon, accused Jobayer Hossain, another classmate of Nusrat, now in custody took a PBI team to the Dangi Khal behind the madrassah from where the cops seized a burqa worn by one of the male assailants.
PBI inspector and investigation officer of the case Md Shaha Alam said from the confessional statement of Nur Uddin and Sahadat Hossain Shamim, police came to know that five accused, three males and two females, took part in the mission to murder Nusrat in cold blood wearing burqas and hand gloves.
He said that the PBI seized one of the burqas with help from Jobayer.
Criminal Investigation Department special superintendent in Cumilla Mostafa Kamal said that the members of probe committee formed by the police headquarters to investigate into the local cops’ negligence in discharging their duties since Principal Siraj harassed Nusrat sexually completed their investigations in the Sonagazi area and that they were expected to submit their report within seven days.
He said that they had visited the place of occurrence, Nusrat’s family members, the madrassah teachers, staff, students and their guardians, police officials and a cross section of people and found many clues relating to the incident.
In the capital, Janatar Mancha Foundation held a demonstration in front of the National Press Club demanding justice for Nusrat.
The Centre for Human Rights Movement held a separate demonstration at Kakrail Intersection demanding exemplary punishment for Nusrat’s murderers.
In Feni, hundreds of students of GA Academy School and Central High School of the district town held separate demonstrations near their schools demanding justice for Nusrat.
Feni district unit of Nari Jote held a demonstration in front of Shaheed Minar on Tank Road demanding justice for Nusrat and students’ safety at educational institutions.
In Khagrachari, rights activists, civil society members, journalists and students formed a human chain at Shapla Square in the district town demanding capital punishment for Nusrat’s killers.
Nusrat, 18, was set on fire on April 6 as she refused to withdraw her accusation against Siraj-ud-Doula, principal of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrassah.
On April 10, she died while on life support at the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Siraj was arrested on March 28 after Nusrat’s mother lodged a case with Sonagazi police station for sexually harassing her daughter.
Nusrat’s bother Mahmudul Hasan Noman field another case with the police station on Aril 8 naming eight people and several others unnamed including four wearing burkas, veils and gloves for setting Nusrat on fire that caused her death.
Police have till now arrested 18 people including all the eight named in the FIR.
