Rape victim declines to appear at HC hearing to claim compensation
22-year old college girl who became a victim of raping by two police officers of Saturia police station in Manikganj in February declined to appear at the High Court Division’s hearing to claim the compensations from the government and the police.
The court in a ruling asked the home secretary, the inspector general of police and the police superintendent of Manikganj to explain why they would not be directed to pay Tk 50 lakh as compensation to the victim.
On March 10, a bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal issued the ruling after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition jointly filed by Children’s Charity Bangladesh Foundation and Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust.
The victim asked BLAST lawyers to say ‘Who asked you to claim compensation for me,’ said BLAST lawyer Abdul Halim who appeared for the victim.
After repeated requests, the victim with her relatives met BLAST lawyers at their Supreme Court chamber and declined to claim the compensation.
‘The victim even did not want to share her address and family details with us’, Halim told New Age.
‘I think she is afraid to claim the compensation as the government and the police were her opponents in the case,’ said Halim.
He said that Saturia police recently submitted charge sheet against sub-inspector Sekendar Hossain, assistant sub-inspector Mazharul Islam of Saturia police station, both are in jail custody.
