BU VC granted leave until tenure expires

Barishal University vice-chancellor SM Imamul Haque has been granted 46-day leave with effect from April 11 to May 26, the last day of his tenure, in the wake of month-long student agitation demanding his removal.
Students welcomed the decision and termed it as their victory.
Students, backed by a section of teachers and officers, started the agitation on March 27 in demand of removal of the vice-chancellor holding him liable for all the irregularities and corruption in the university.
Registrar Hasinur Rahman said an official order signed by Habibur Rahman, deputy secretary of public university section of secondary and higher education division under of education ministry, was issued confirming the leave.
President and university chancellor Abdul Hamid had approved the order, Hasinur added.
Till further order, BU treasurer AKM Mahbub Hasan will act as the VC.
Hasinur Rahman said Imamul Haque earlier applied for leave on April 11 and the authorities granted him leave till April 29, 2019, but through the new order the leave was extended up to May 26, the last day of the tenure of VC Imamul Huq.
Acting VC AKM Mahbub Hasan said they expected that the students would go back to classes and teachers and officers would join their duties as the vice-chancellor was sent to leave.
Student leader Lokman Hossain said their peaceful agitation, including rallies, sit-in, class boycott, road blocks, hunger strike etc., demanding removal of the VC succeeded as the VC was sent to leave up to his tenure.
Barishal University Teachers’ Association secretary Abu Zafar Mia said regular academic activities would resume today as the demand of removing the vice-chancellor was fulfilled.
Earlier on April 26 afternoon a nine-member team of local powerful leaders led by former BU syndicate member Professor Md Hanif convinced the protesters to postpone their hunger strike.
They assured the students that the VC would be sent on leave within April 29, 2019 afternoon as many participants of the hunger strike had become sick.
BU students launched protest on March 27 after Imamul Haque in a programme labelled the students, who opposed an Independence Day party on the campus, as Razakarer Bachcha (children of collaborators).
Then the VC declaring closure of BU sine dies and asking the students to vacate the halls within March 28 afternoon.
On March 29, the VC expressed regret about his comment, which was rejected by the students who vowed to continue their agitation demanding removal of the VC.
