19 injured as Bangladesh Biman plane skids off Yangon runway
Nineteen people, including an infant, were injured as a Biman Bangladesh Airlines plane skidded off a runway while landing at Yangon airport in Myanmar Wednesday evening amidst a freak storm.
The national flag carrier’s spokesperson Shakil Meraj said, ‘All passengers are safe.’ There were 29 passengers and 4 crew members on board, he said, adding that 18 passengers and an infant sustained injuries and were taken to hospital in Yangon for treatment.
Agence France-Presse reported that the people on board the stricken aircraft were from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Canada, China, India, France and Switzerland.
‘It happened near Terminal 3 where it fell onto the cargo runway as it landed,’ a police officer at the airport told AFP, adding that the nose and both wings of the plane were damaged.
Yangon International Airport announced a closure of ‘runway operations’ due to heavy rains.
Other incoming flights were diverted to the capital Naypyidaw before Yangon airport re-opened at 9.15pm (Myanmar local time), reported AFP
The plane, Bombardier Dash 8, took off Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at about 3:45pm and skidded off the runway during landing at about 6:22pm Myanmar time due to thundershower, said officials.
A special flight of Biman flew from Dhaka at about 11:25pm for Yangon to bring back the passengers and crew members of the stricken plane.
