AUG 15 KILLINGS : Objective was to take revenge for defeat of Pakistan: Hasina

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Saturday said that the main objective of August 15, 1975 killings was to take revenge for the defeat of the Pakistani occupation forces in the War of Independence and for the establishment of a new country, Bangladesh.
Hasina, also the ruling Awami League president, made the remarks at a blood donation programme at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in the city.
Bangladesh Krishak League, peasant organisation backed by the Awami League, organised the blood donation programme as part of the party’s 40-day programmes to mark the ‘Month of Mourning’ commemorating the 40th anniversary of the killing of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The first day’s programme began on Saturday with the placing of wreaths at Sheikh Mujib’s portrait at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and at his grave at Tungipara in Gopalganj.
Hasina, also daughter of Sheikh Mujib, said that the killing of her father along with most of the family on August 15, 1975 was a strike on the victory of the Bengali nation.
Leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate bodies at one-minute past zero hour on Saturday took part in a candle-light vigil and placed wreaths on the premises of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi.
Senior party leaders led by its general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam paid homage at the grave of Sheikh Mujib at Tungipara in Gopalganj. Special prayers were also held for the eternal peace of his soul
A group of army officials killed Sheikh Mujib, along with most of his family members, on August 15, 1975. Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, escaped the carnage as they were abroad.
Ashraful urged all to observe the 40th death anniversary of Sheikh Mujib with profound respect.
Replying to questions of reporters after placing wreaths at Tungipara, he said that there would be no existence of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party if it boycotted the next general election.
‘The politics of boycotting polls is not effective now,’ he said.
In reply to a question on the possibility of midterm polls, the AL leader said that there was no agenda for discussion on midterm polls in any party meeting.
He said, ‘The prime minister hadn’t talked with us on the matter (midterm polls). There is constitutional power vested in the prime minister to request the president to dissolve the Jatiya Sangsad [parliament] at any time for holding polls. If she feels necessity of holding the polls at any time, the polls will be held, and if not, the polls will be held as per schedule.’
He also called on the BNP chairperson not to celebrate her birthday on August 15, the National Mourning Day.
