WASA MD’s absence irks JS body
A parliamentary watchdog on Thursday expressed its resentment at the absence of Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority’s managing director in its meeting despite being summoned.
The Committee on Estimates had asked DWASA managing director Taqsem A Khan to appear before the committee at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in the wake of public protests against acute water crisis and supply of low quality water by DWASA in the capital but none from the authority appeared, said members of the committee.
The committee in its second meeting also expressed its dissatisfaction over the sluggish progress of work some development projects under the Public Health Engineering Directorate and Dhaka WASA, said a press release from the parliament secretariat.
The committee also advised the Local Government Division to split the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority into Dhaka North and Dhaka South units in style of defunct Dhaka City Corporation to ensure the supply of fresh water for the densely populated capital.
Domestic water crisis became acute at different parts of the capital amidst the heat wave continuing causing untold public suffering in Ramadan.
Despite repeated attempts over phone, the DWASA managing director could not be reached for his version.
The committee also asked to submit a report of some development activities under the Local Government Division in 30 days.
Committee members Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Ahsan Adelur Rahman and Wasika Aeysha attended the meeting with its chairman Abdush Shahid in the chair.
