Govt agencies should be divided: Khokon

Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon on Friday said that the government agencies providing various services in the capital should be divided into two parts like the city corporation.
At a press conference held at a city hotel marking the completion of four years of his taking charge as mayor, Khokon claimed that the city corporations’ service quality has improved after its split in 2011.
He said at least 56 government agencies, including Dhaka WASA, Titas Gas and the Dhaka Power Distribution Company are in function in the city now.
Asked about the proposed city government, the mayor said the city government is also possible after splitting the agencies.
Sayeed Khokon claimed that he has improved city services including street light, better roads, waste management, drainage, footpaths and open spaces like parks and playgrounds, and also solved waterlogging.
While asked about his failure as a mayor, he denied to give any direct answer but said that people would evaluate him.
In May 2015, Sayeed Khokon took oath as the mayor of Dhaka South City and Annisul Huq for Dhaka North City after the ruling Awami League-backed candidates won the election amid boycotting by other candidates on allegation of irregularities.
Sayeed said that city corporation was running with only 40 per cent of its manpower which also created a challenge for better city service.
An Iftar Mahfil also was organised after the press conference where parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and planning minister MA Mannan, among others, were present.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee also on Thursday recommended splitting Dhaka WASA into two parts to ensure supply of safe and drinkable water to the city dwellers.
