SCHOOLGIRL’S SUICIDE AFTER RAPE Seven arrested, OC withdrawn over negligence

Rajshahi police on Monday withdrew Mohanpur police station officer-in-charge for his negligence in duty over the suicide of a schoolgirl allegedly after she was raped.
Md Shahidullah, Rajshahi superintendent of police, told New Age on Tuesday that they had closed Mohanpur police station OC Abul Hossain to the district police lines on Monday afternoon on administrative grounds.
He said they formed a three-member probe body, headed by additional superintendent of police (special branch) Muhammad Motiur Rahman Mollah, following the allegation raised against the officer-in-charge by the victim’ father.
The committee was asked to submit its report within three days, said Shahidullah adding that they would take next step following the probe report.
Afzal Hossain, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Mohonpur police station told New Age that they arrested seven accused including Mukul and Sonia in a case filed the victim’s father.
A class-IX student of a local high school committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan on May 17 leaving a suicide note.
Her note states, ‘Dear parents, I apologise to you. I’ve got a lot of things from you- so much love, lots of love. But to a girl, her self-respect is the most important thing. I myself have made my own family disgraceful. I cannot tell this shameful story to unknown people every day. Though the perpetrator is punished, I will not get my honour back. So forgive me’.
The victim’s family members alleged that she (victim) took her life following insult to her and her family and continuous threat from the accused family.
The victim’s younger sister alleged that their neighbour Mukul, son of Anis Uddin, had been harassing the victim for the past six months on her way to and from school as she turned down his love proposal. She had also informed the matter to her family.
On April 23, the schoolgirl was taken to a coaching centre by her friend Sonia against her will. Mukul, with the help of Sonia, abducted her and raped her. The schoolgirl was found lying unconscious by the Mohanpur-Kaliganj road in Khanpur Bagbazar area, around six kilometres off her house, on the same day.
The victim’s father went to the police station in that evening to file an abduction case, but officer- in-charge Abul Hossain kept him waiting until midnight without recording any case.
Although the victim’s father went to the police station for four consecutive days, police did not record the case, rather they kept him waiting for hours.
