Cabinet okays speedy trial act extension bill

The cabinet on Monday approved the Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) (Amendment) Bill, 2019 seeking to extend the tenure of the speedy trial act for five more years as the law expired in last 
April. 
Chaired by prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the weekly cabinet meeting at her Tejgaon office also gave approval to the Customs Bill, 2019.
The tenure of the Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) Act that came into force in 2002 expired in April, 2019,’ cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told a briefing at the secretariat after the meeting. 
Now the tenure of the act would be extended for five more years to 2024, he said.
He noted that there were no other changes made to the act.
About the reason for extending the act’s tenure, he said that there were many sensitive cases that required quick disposal.
About the Customs Bill, 2019, he said that the same bill was approved by the cabinet on October 5, 2018 and was placed in the parliament.
But the bill could not be passed as the term of the Jatiya Sangsad was over by the time, he noted.
He said that the cabinet again approved the bill, which had no change.
Shafiul Alam further said that Rosatom, the state-owned Russian nuclear energy corporation, conferred awards on Science and Technology Minister Yeafesh Osman for his contribution to e-development of the nuclear industry and on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant as the best project in the field of development of human resources.
The awards were handed over to the PM.
Responding to a question whether the cabinet discussed the purchase of household materials, including pillows, at exorbitant rates to furnish flats under the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, he replied in the negative.
The cabinet secretary said that the cabinet expressed condolences at the deaths of two Ekushey Padak-winning singers Subir Nandi and Khalid Hussain.
It hailed the Bangladesh National Cricket Team for winning the tri-nation series in Ireland and congratulated the Under-19 national women football team for winning the Bagamata International Gold Cup Football Tournament.
