BNP’s Rumeen wins reserved JS seat
The Election Commission on Tuesday unofficially declared Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s lone candidate Rumeen Farhana elected to a reserved woman seat in the Jatiya Sangsad.
Returning officer M Abul Kashem made the announcement at the Nirbachon Bhaban in the capital as Rumeen did not take back her nomination paper on the last day for withdrawal on Tuesday.
According to the electoral law, main opposition BNP was eligible for only one of the 50 reserved seats for women in the parliament as the party won six of the 300 constituencies in the December 30, 2018 general elections.
Rumeen Farhana is the assistant international affairs secretary of the BNP.
The opportunity of contesting the reserved seat was created for BNP candidates after its lawmakers joined the parliament.
Five of the six BNP leaders elected in the December 30 elections have joined the JS.
In the 11th JS polls, the ruling Awami League bagged 258 seats, its grand-alliance partner Jatiya Party 22 seats, BNP-led Jatiya Oikya Front 8 seats, other parties 9 seats while independent candidates secured 3 seats.
