BNP’s Rumeen takes oath as MP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s MP-elect for reserved seats for women in the Jatiya Sangsad Rumeen Farhana took oath as a member of the 11th parliament on Sunday.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the swearing-in at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban while parliament secretariat’s senior secretary Zafar Ahmed Khan conducted the oath-taking ceremony, a parliament secretariat press release said.

Earlier on May 28, the Election Commission declared BNP’s candidate Rumeen Farhana elected to one of the reserved seats for women in parliament.

Returning officer M Abul Kashem made the announcement at the Election Commission building in the capital as Rumeen did not withdraw her nomination paper on the day.

According to the electoral law, main opposition BNP was eligible for only one of the 50 reserved seats for women in the parliament as the party won six out of the 300 constituencies in the December 30, 2018 general elections.

Rumeen Farhana is the assistant international affairs secretary of the BNP.

Five of the six BNP leaders elected in the December 30 elections have joined the JS.
