ACC director Enamul suspended

Anti-Corruption Commission  director Khandaker Enamul Basir was suspended on Monday on the allegation of sharing information of ongoing probes against deputy inspector general of police Mizanur Rahman for accumulating illegal wealth.

Basir was suspended one day after an allegation surfaced that he had taken Tk 40 lakh as bribe  from DIG Mizan to quash his corruption charge.

‘Khandaker Enamul Basir is suspended from today [Monday] as he breached the job rules of the Anti-Corruption Commission leaking information of an ongoing investigation,’ ACC chairman Iqbal Mahmood told reporters while leaving his office.

After the media exposed that Basir took Tk 40 lakh as bribe from Mizan for submitting the  inquiry report in his favour, the ACC formed a three-member committee led by secretary Muhammad Dilwar Bakth to probe the matter.

Basir was assigned to hold inquiry against Mizan after he was attached to the police headquarters over allegations of amassing wealth illegally.

‘The probe committee found that Basir breached the service rules and recommended departmental punishment against him,’ said Iqbal adding that the commission suspended him.

He said that the commission also decided to start inquiry into the bribery allegation and another director was assigned to take over the probes against Mizan.

Responding a question Iqbal said that the commission felt no embarrassment over the incident as it cannot take the responsibility of integrity of 874 ACC officials but the ACC would take action against any official indulging in cprruption.

Reputedly, at Basir’s order Mizan submitted his 28 years’ salary statements.

Basir took Mizan’s personal cell phone number saying as their conversations on official phones would be tapped.

Mizan presented a mobile phone and a SIM Card to Basir.

And around January 10, Basir met Mizan at Ramna Park and demanded Tk 50 lakh to quash the charges he faces.

As per the deal Mizan gave Basir Tk 25 lakh on January 15 and Tk 15 lakh on February 25.

On May 30, Basir went to Mizan’s wife’s shop at Police Plaza at Gulshan in the capital and said he had submitted a report accusing Mizan under pressure from the ACC bosses.

According to ACC officials, during  interrogations by the ACC probe team on Monday Basir claimed that his telephonic conversations with Mizan aired by a private  TV station was fake.

Asked to comment on the issue, the ACC chairman said that that the authenticity of the telephonic conversations between Basir and Mizan aired by the TV network would be ascertained through forensic test.

On April 25, 2018, the ACC summoned DIG Mizan after the media exposed that he had amassed wealth illegally.

He was interrogated for seven and a half hours for the illegality.

Mizan allegedly picked up a 25-year-old woman in July 2017 and forcibly married her, and picked up a female news presenter of a private TV channel at gunpoint in December 2017.
