BNP MPs question JS legitimacy again
Bangladesh Nationalist Party members of parliament on Sunday once again questioned the legitimacy of the current parliament saying that it was formed through a faulty election.
While taking part in discussion on supplementary budget for 2018-19, they said that joining of six parliamentarians of the party in the house would not give legitimacy to the 11the parliament, as it was formed through an ‘unacceptable’ election on December 30, 2018.
They also said that they joined parliament as their party was not getting space for democratic practice like holding rallies in line with constitutional rights.
‘Many are talking that why we have joined the parliament, when there are questions over the last general election which was unacceptable,’ BNP MP Harunur Rashid said adding that the Election Commission had failed to hold an acceptable election. ‘They have ruined the parliamentary election as well as local government election.
He said joining of six BNP MPs in parliament would not legitimise this parliament.
BNP MPs Harun and Rumeen Farhana said that they joined parliament as their party was not getting scope to practice democratic rights like organising processions, rallies.
‘There is absence of democratic space for us to express our demands in line with constitution,’ Harun said.
He alleged that ruling Awami League or grand alliance were allowed to hold rallies with fanfare but when the BNP wanted to hold rallies then question of permission arose.
He said that BNP MPs joined parliament to restore good governance in the country.
‘I urge the leader of the house to hold a national dialogue with participation from leaders of political parties to have good governance in the country,’ he proposed.
‘We came here to talk about countrymen, party activists in parliament,’ she said. ‘Votes in all 300 constituencies were looted in the last election’, she alleged.
She urged all MPs to say whether they were elected by direct vote keeping almighty Allah as the witness.
She said successive Awami League governments were failing to implement budget since it took power in 2009.
Amount of bad loans reached to Tk 1.55 lakh crore including the written off bad loans this year from Tk 22,000 crore in 2009.
She demanded disclosure of the names of bad borrowers in the country.
She alleged that Bangladeshi money was being siphoned off to different countries. ‘This money is being invested to Second Home project in Malaysia and used to build Begumpara in Canada.’
Cyber heist took place in Bangladesh bank, enforced disappearance, violence against women and rape were rampant, she said.
Rumeen faced shouting from treasury bench several times and deputy speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah, who was chairing the sitting at the time, expunged unparliamentarily words of the speech of lone BNP woman MP.
Earlier on Jun 11, lone reserved seat BNP MP Rumeen Farhana criticised the government’s role for not granting bail to BNP’s jailed chairperson Khaleda Zia.
