36 lakh cases pending with courts, law minister tells JS

Law minister Anisul Huq on Tuesday told parliament that more than 35.82 lakh cases were now pending with the Supreme Court and the lower courts across the country.
‘The total number of the cases pending with the Supreme Court and the lower courts in the country is 35,82,347 till March 31,’ he said, in reply to a question from treasury bench MP Habiba Rahman Khan. The minister said that the government has taken measures like increasing the number of judges and resolving the court room crisis for quick disposal of the number of cases.
Anisul said that 13.28 lakh civil cases and 17.25 lakh criminal cases were pending with the lower courts.
A total of 96,114 civil cases, 3.17 lakh criminal cases, and 93,107 writ and appeals were pending with the High Court Division.
A total of 14,023 civil cases, 7,655 criminal cases, and 135 contempt petition were pending with the Appellate Division, said Anisul.
The law minister while answering another query of ruling party MP Haji Md Salim said that there were 59,860 cases pending with family courts across the country.
He said that the highest 5,509 cases were pending with family courts in Dhaka, followed by 4,643 in in Chattogram, 2,165 in Mymensing, 1,996 in Rajshahi and 1,898 in Bagura.
Replying a question of independent MP Mohammad Shahid Islam, the law minister said that the government has a plan to form an anti-drug court or tribunal under the Narcotics Control Act 2018.
