Three killed, 100 injured as train derailed in Moulvibazar

At least three people were killed and 100 more were injured, 10 of them critically, as five compartments of Upaban Express train derailed on Boromchal Bridge at Kulaura in Moulvibazar on Sunday night and one of the compartments fell into the Boromchal canal.

Police sources said that the number of deceased and injured might rise as the compartment was yet to be recovered from the canal.

Rail communication between Sylhet and rest of the country snapped following the incident.

According to railway police sources, at about 11:45pm on Sunday, five compartments of the train Upaban Express derailed on the bridge and one of the compartments fell into the canal beneath the bridge.

Fire Service control room officials said that till 1:30am on Monday they recovered at least three bodies from the spot.

They also sent 10 critically injured people to the Sadar Hospital.

A senior railway official told New Age that the number of deceased and injured people might rise as some could be rammed under the compartment fell into the canal.

Ten units of the fire service, railway police and Bangladesh Police members continued working there to rescue the victims.

Darkness is hindering the rescue process, said police members.
