Ershad admitted to CMH, likely to be flown to Singapore today
Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad’s health condition improved a little after taking treatment at the Coronary Care Unit of Dhaka Combined Military Hospital, said party secretary general Mashiur Rahman Ranga on Wednesday.
‘He was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after he came down with a fever with other chronic multiple complications,’ he said.
Ranga also said that some JP top brass were ready to take Ershad to Singapore National University Hospital today for better treatment.
‘We will take him only after the CMH doctors allow us to do so,’ he said.
The former military dictator and currently leader of the opposition, Ershad, received treatment at the Singapore hospital twice — recently in January and previously in December last year — after suffering a severe liver problem, anaemia and other complications.
Ershad’s re-admission to CMH was as an issue discussed at length at a meeting of party activists held Wednesday where his younger brother, also JP’s acting chairman, GM Quader expressed concerns over the future of the party.
‘He is very sick and we don’t know what will happen. We even don’t know what will happen to the party in his absence since he is the nucleus of the party,’ Quader said addressing the JP activists from different districts of Sylhet and Chattogram divisions.
Quader also said that he took the opinions of the root-level leaders in the previous three days of the four-day meeting of party activists organised at a community centre in the capital.
‘We admit that we are not playing the expected role of the opposition. But, we are trying to organise the party to achieve the goal,’ he said.
Replaying to the complaints of the party activists regarding the formation of the committees undemocratically, he said that none of the district or upazila-level committees were formed through organisational order.
‘The central committee of the party is the chairman’s concern. And the constitution of the party has empowered him to take any decision,’ Quader said.
Regarding the ‘nomination trade’ during the last national elections, Quader said that he was not the acting chairman at that time, so he was not in a position to elaborate on it.
‘But, such incident will not recur as long as I’m the acting chairman,’ he assured.
Today’s scheduled meeting of party activists from Khulna and Barishal divisions most likely to be cancelled if JP leaders decide to take Ershad to Singapore, Ranga said.
