Verdict in RP Saha, son Bhabani murders today
The verdict in the sensational war crimes case of murdering philanthropist Ranada Prasad Saha, better known as Danbir RP Saha, his son Bhabani Prasad Saha, friend Rabi and 58 others during the Liberation War would be delivered today by the International Crimes Tribunal-1.
ICT-1 chairman Justice Md Shahinur Islam announced the schedule at a full court hearing attended by Justice Amir Hossain and Justice Md Abu Ahmed Jamadar.
The lone accused, Md Mahbubur Rahman alias Mahbub alias Mahebul, 71, of Bairatipara, Mirzapur Municipal Town, Tangail, is in jail custody.
Arrested on November 7, 2015, Mahbub was indicted on three counts of genocide on March 28, 2018.
In 1971, Mahbub was a Jamaat member who joint the Razakar Bahini, or force, according to the prosecution.
He was tried for committing genocide by murdering 33 Hindu villagers in Andhara and Baimhati, Mirzapur, Tangail on May 7, 1971.
The 2nd war crimes charge for which he was tried was committing genocide by abducting, torturing and murdering philanthropist RP Saha, his son Bhabani, friend Gour Gopal Saha, the family’s cattle tender Matlab and a guard on May 7, 1971.
All of them were murdered at RP Saha’s Sirajdikhan Road residence in the then Narayanganj sub-divisional town.
The 3rd war crimes charge for which he was tried was committing genocide by murdering 22 Hindu villagers in Andhara, Sarishadair, Durgapur, Kanthalia, Postakumari, the then Mirzapur thana, Tangail district after torturing them in confinement. The victims were abducted on May 14, 1971. This would be the 38th verdict in as many war crimes cases in free Bangladesh.
Mahbub’s trial ended on April 24, 2019 with 15 prosecution witnesses testifying his war crimes.
No defence witness was produced.
Until now, 87 war criminals were convicted, 61 to death and 26 were jailed.
Death sentences of six war crimes convicts had been executed.
