Sheikh Kamal’s 66th birth anniv observed

The 66th birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed today in the capital and elsewhere across the country through holding different programmes.
Different political, socio-cultural and sports organisations have taken up various programmes including placing wreaths at the portrait and the Banani grave of Sheikh Kamal, arranging Qurankhani, offering doa-munajat and discussion meetings.
Leaders, activists and supporters of Bangladesh Awami League, its associate bodies and like-minded organisations paid their tribute to Sheikh Kamal by placing wreaths on his portrait at Dhanmondi Abahani Club premises at 8:00am and later they also placed wreath at his grave at Banani Graveyard in the capital this morning. Qurankhani, milad and doa-mahfil were also arranged.
Awami League joint-general secretaries – Mahabub-ul-Alam Hanif  and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, party organising secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim among others were present.
Later, Dhaka City unit of Awami League, Awami Juba League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Awami Swechchhsebak League, Juba Mahila League, Krishak League, Mahila Awami League and Jatiya Sramik League placed separate wreaths at there.
Awami Swechchhasebak League arranged milad, doa-mahfil  and a discussion in front of the Bangabandhu Bhaban at noon. Health and family welfare minister Mohammad Nasim was present as the chief guest.
Born on August 5, 1949 at Tungipara in Gopalganj, Sheikh Kamal, a former executive member of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of Bangladesh Awami League, was an executive member of Jatiya Chhatra League, student wing of Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League.
Well-trained on war-course and obtained commissioned before taking part in Bangladesh Independence War in 1971, he was the aide-de-camp to Commander-in-Chief of Bangladesh Armed Forces General Ataul Gani Osmani during the War of Liberation.
Kamal passed school secondary certificate examination from Capital’s Shahin School and HSC from Dhaka College and later got admission into Dhaka University in Social Science department. Sheikh Kamal faced martyrdom on August 15 in 1975 at the age of 26 while he was an examinee of master’s degree.
He was one of the pioneers of modern football in Bangladesh and also founder-president of the country’s leading sports club Abahani Krira Chakra.
Kamal used to play cricket in first division for Azad Boys Club and Basketball too in first division for Spurs Club. He was also founder-member of Dhaka Theatre and Spandan Shilpa Gosthi, a musical band of folk songs.
