Ershad on life support now
Jatiya Party chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad was put on life support at 4:15pm on Thursday as his health condition deteriorated further at the Dhaka Combined Military Hospital, JP secretary-general Mashiur Rahman Ranga told New Age.
Ershad has been suffering from myelodysplastic syndromes and several other complications in his lungs, liver and kidneys, he said.
The party’s top leaders, however, contested an earlier statement made by health minister Zahid Maleque after visiting Ershad at the CMH Hospital on Monday that he had been put on life support and had also requested all to pray for him.
JP leaders for the past three days had been saying that Ershad’s condition remained unchanged and was taking oxygen under pressure.
On Thursday noon, the party’s acting chairman GM Quader at the routine press conference on Ershad’s health at the latter’s Banani office told the press that his health was not improving as per the expectations of the attending doctors.
Quader said that his condition remained almost the same for the past three days despite treatment by CMH doctors in consultation with foreign specialists.
‘We are waiting for their suggestion for either taking him abroad or calling in a foreign specialist physician to Dhaka,’ Quader said.
The 89-year-old former military dictator, now leader of the opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad (parliament), Ershad has been ill for quite some time and was admitted to the CMH on June 22.
