HC asks mayors to stamp out aedes mosquitoes in 24 hours
The High Court Division on Sunday asked two mayors of the capital and the government to stamp out aedes mosquitos in 24 hours.
A bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi issued the suo moto directives to prevent the spread of dengue and chikungunya infections.
The court directed the respondents to submit compliance reports at the next hearing on July 22.
The respondents include the mayors of Dhaka North City and Dhaka South City and the chief executive officers of Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation, the health secretary, the LGRD secretary and the director general of health services.
The court in the rule also directed the respondents to explain in one week why their failure to prevent aedes mosquito breeding and to stop the spread of dengue, chikungunya infections across the capital would not be declared as illegal.
The court also asked the respondents to explain why steps would not be taken against responsible persons for their failure to take effective measures to prevent the spread of the deadly diseases.
At least 11 people died of dengue and chikungunya and over 100 infected patients are under treatment at hospitals.
On Thursday, Supreme Court lawyer Tanzim Al Islam in a legal notice asked mayor Sayeed Khokon to pay Tk 50 lakh as compensation in seven working days as his wife Sadiqun Nahar had been infected with dengue due to his failure to stamp out aedes mosquitos.
The notice sent to the office of Dhaka South city mayor Sayeed Khokon through registered post, warned the mayor that he would file a writ petition to realise the compensation if he failed to pay it.
