Man claiming to be Subrata demands toll from Anu Muhammad

A caller using an Indian telephone number on Tuesday called noted economist Anu Muhammad and demanded toll threatening him that his family members would face enforced disappearance if he failed to pay demanded money.

Anu Muhammad, a professor of economics at Jahangirnagar University and member secretary of National Committee to Protect Oil Gas Mineral Resources Power and Ports, told New Age that a caller from number +918017822725 called him at about 10:00am on Tuesday and identified himself as Subrata Bain.

Anu said that the caller told him that he now resided in Kolkata and once became a top terror and demanded money for treatment of his younger brethren.

‘The caller threatened me to see how he can collect the money from me. He threatened that members of my family will have to face enforced disappearance in case of my failure of paying the demanded money,’ Anu Muhammad said.

The economics professor said that he did not take any legal action until 9:00pm. ‘I will file a general diary with the police soon.’

Meanwhile, the National Committee convener Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah, in a statement in the afternoon, asked the government to identify the extortionist, arrest him and ensure exemplary punishment.

He said that it was very much possible to identify the caller through present day information technology.

‘Though, we earlier came to know that a gang, using names of different identified criminals, was demanding toll to different people but there was no visible step against them. That is why, they became reckless and dared to demand toll from Anu Muhammad,’ Shahidullah said.
