BNP for national consensus on law and order

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday expressed deep concern about deteriorating law and order situation and said that the party was giving priority to create a national consensus on the issue.

BNP standing committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, expressed the concern at its meeting at party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s office at Gulshan, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a briefing after the meeting.

He said that the law and order situation and people’s safety and the overall security system were collapsing  and the situation created in the country compelled them to think that the country was witnessing an anarchic situation.

Mentioning the incidents of murder in courtroom, murdering in broad daylight in Barguna and killing the prime accused in ‘gunfight’, arresting the victim’s wife and taking her in remand, demanding toll to noted economist Anu Muhammad in the name of Subrata Bain, he said that the law and order situation is uncontrolled.

He said that many were being picked up and facing enforced disappearance and those who are engaged in maintaining law and order were violating law most. 

Fakhrul questioned whether the country had any government.

He said that they were thinking that a national consensus should be created.  ‘To forge national consensus, we need to talk to different stakeholders. We have been thinking about it and giving the issue a priority.’

The BNP secretary general alleged that the government was reluctant to address the flood situation that is gradually deteriorating and people’s miseries were increasing.  ‘The government is not standing by the people.’

He alleged that the relief minister had gone to no flood affected area to see the people’s agony and solving it. ‘It proves that the government has no accountability to the people.’

He said that they had formed a 21-member relief committee with standing committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku as its convener and the party’s relief affairs secretary Aminur Rsahid Yasin as member secretary.

He said that the committee would begin its activities soon.

Fakhrul also urged the government to give a clarification about the inclusion of chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda as a member of Hajj representative team.

He said that the CEC was a member of a representative team led by religious affairs state minister. ‘It is a ridiculous matter.’

This proves that this government and the election commission do not bother about the Constitution and, at the same time, they consider the state as their own property.
