Suspended ACC director Basir arrested in bribery case
The Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday evening arrested its suspended directory Khandakar Enamul Basir on charge of taking bribe from suspended deputy inspector general of police Mizanur Rahman.
‘Basir was arrested in the capital’s Gabtoli area at about 10:30pm,’ Basir’s lawyer Kamal Hossain told New Age.
The ACC director stands accused of realising Tk 40 lakh from the suspended DIG Mizan, who is already in custody pertaining to a case filed over amassing wealth illegally.
Earlier, the bribery case was filed by ACC director Sheikh Mohammad Fanafillah against Mizan and Enamul Basir with its Dhaka district coordination office-1 under the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012.
Suspended DIG came under scanner after a private TV channel reported that Mizan gave Tk 40 lakh to ACC Enamul Basir to get a clean chit in a corruption case.
Mizan was an additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
He was withdrawn on January 9 last year following the allegation of threatening a female news presenter of a private television channel.
Mizan allegedly kidnapped 25-year-old woman in July 2017 and then forcibly married her.
On June 24, the ACC filed another case against Mizan, his wife Sohelia Anar Ratna and nephew Mahmudul Hasan on charges of amassing over Tk 3 crore beyond known sources of income.
Earlier, the HC handed Mizan over to the police after he appeared before it and sought bail in the corruption case. The same court sent Mizan to jail rejecting his bail prayer.
