BADDA LYNCHING Ibrahim Hridoy to be quizzed for 5 days
A Dhaka Court on Wednesday granted police five days to interrogate Ibrahim Hridoy in custody over his involvement with the lynching of a woman in Badda recently.
Hridoy was arrested in Narayanganj on Tuesday evening pertaining to the lynching of the woman suspecting her as a child abductor.
Metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Jasim allowed the interrogation while the investigation officer of the case inspector Abdur Razzak sought 10 days to interrogate the arrested in police custody.
There was no pleader for defence, Badda general recording officer Liakat Ali confirmed.
On Saturday, Taslima Begum Renu, 40, a mother of two, was beaten to death by a mob at about 8:30am when she went to Uttar Badda Government Primary School to learn the admission process for her daughter.
Her nephew Nasir Uddin Tito filed a case against 400 or 500 unknown people with the Badda police station.
Local people told police that some locals thought that she was a child abductor and attacked her.
Videos taken on mobile phones and closed-circuit cameras from nearby buildings show some youths kicking and pounding the 40-year-old woman, amid a gathering of several hundred people.
Most of the people played the part of silent spectators when the mob descended upon Renu.
The incident came a day after three people, including a woman, were beaten by a mob in Thakurgaon.
The Police Headquarters said it is aware of a rumour being spread about human sacrifices needed for the construction of Padma bridge, which may have led to the attacks.
The arrestee, Ibrahim Hridoy, 19, was a street vendor selling vegetables near Uttar Badda Government Primary School in the capital, quoting Nazmul Hasan, assistant commissioner of Detective Branch (Dhaka East).
Hridoy was identified using videos of the incident that went viral in social media and drew flak from all quarters.
Earlier on Monday, three other young men were held in connection with the incident from Badda.
At least 14 people were lynched on suspicion of being child abductors in different places across the country.
