Cruelty to children won’t be spared: PM

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said that the culprits behind the recent violence against children will not be spared and that the criminals will get exemplary punishment.
‘We’ll have to ensure exemplary punishment to show people that no one is spared if one commits crimes,’ she said, reports United News of Bangladesh.
The prime minister was speaking at a function organised by Women and Child Affairs Ministry at Osmani memorial auditorium marking the 85th birth anniversary of Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib, the wife of Bangladesh’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She was one among massacred family members, including Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on the fateful night of August 15, 1975.
Chaired by state minister for Women and Child Affairs Minister Meher Afroz Chumki, the function was addressed, among others, by chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on Women and Child Affairs ministry Rebeca Momen, MP, Bangla Academy director general Shamsuzzaman Khan, Chairman of Jatiya Mahila Sangstha Momtaj Begum and Bangladesh Shishu Academy chairperson Selina Hossain.
The prime minister said she has already given the directives to the authorities concerned to take appropriate actions against the child oppressors.
Hasina also said she had a meeting with the home minister, the law minister and the home secretary in this regard.
‘I’ve told them to take proper steps to ensure exemplary punishment to those who get involved in such crimes,’ she said.
The prime minister came up with the remarks at a time when the incidents of child repression and murder are reported from different parts of the country.
A twelve-year old boy, Rakib, who used to work at a motorcycle garage at Tutpara Central Road in Khulna city, was tortured to death by his employers over quitting his job on August 3.
Meanwhile a month earlier on July 8, 13-year-old boy Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon, of Badeali village in Sylhet, was brutally tortured to death over theft at Sundar Ali Market in Kumargaon of Sylhet.
