Widow Minni appeals to withdraw statement

Detained Aysha Siddika Minni, widow of Rifat Sharif who was hacked to death in broad daylight in Barguna town on June 26, on Wednesday appealed to Barguna Senior Judicial Magistrate to withdraw her statement she had made on July 19 in the case of killing her husband.

Judge Md Sirajul Islam Gazi of the court, after receiving the appeal she sent through Barguna jail authorities, called the case documents from the judge court and set August 14 for hearing on her petition.

Minni’s lawyer Mahbubbul Bari Aslam, also the general secretary of Barguna Bar Association, declined to mention the grounds of her appeal  to the court as he said, ‘it is a sensational case and it is not time to say anything about it’.

Meanwhile, the prison authorities produced all but one detained accused, including Minni, in the case before the court as it was scheduled for hearing the case to know about the progress of investigation in the case.

The accused, who was not produced before the court, was an adolescent and was now kept in an adolescent correction centre, court officials said.

The court also set August 14 as the next date of hearing in the case.

On Tuesday, the Barguna district and sessions judge court rejected the bail petition of Minni in the case of killing her husband.

On July 21, she sought bail to Barguna senior judicial magistrate’s court and the court rejected the prayer.

On July 16, police arrested Minni after a daylong interrogation and a Barguna court placed her on a five-day remand in police custody for interrogation on the following day.

The police have so far arrested 16 people including Minni. The prime accused in the case, Nayon Bond, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police on July 2.

Four of the named accused in the case are still in hiding, according to court officials.

A video clip of the murder captured in a surveillance camera went viral on social media. It showed criminals hacking Rifat Sharif, a 25-year-old internet service provider, brutally in front of Barguna Government College while his wife Minni was trying to save him.
