BNP trying to unite people against one-party rule: Fakhrul
Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said that the country was passing through tough time and the BNP was working to unite the people to defeat the force that had introduced a ‘one-party rule’.
The BNP leader made the comment while addressing a discussion organised by Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh marking its 30th founding anniversary at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
‘Such a tough time had never come to Bangladesh. We possibly did not feel such a helpless situation just before beginning the war of independence in 1971,’ he said.
He said a monstrous force had been destroying the country’s sovereignty and politicising the country’s judicial system and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was not getting justice.
He said the ruling Awami league was acting like continuation of January 11, 2007 government which targeted depoliticising the country and destroying its political forces.
Fakhrul said Awami League had introduced one-party rule in 1975 now implementing a ‘one-party rule in a different way’.
‘We are trying to unite the people…If we can create a mass movement, they will be defeated,’ he said, urging the people not to be worried at this situation.
Criticising the government and its health minister for their failure to tackle the dengue situation, Fakhrul said the pesticide used to kill mosquito was not working due to corruption during procurement.
‘Corruption will be there as they are bringing new pesticides. They are now bringing Kolkata deputy mayor as a consultant,’ he said.
He said the health minister, before going abroad amid widespread dengue outbreak, had commented that the breeding power of Aedes mosquito was alike the Rohingyas and returning home he now claims that he did not know how many people exactly died of dengue.
‘How inhumane he is!’ the BNP secretary general said, describing the situation worse than a state depicted in the acclaimed movie Hirak Rajar Deshe.
Fakhrul asked the government to dissolve parliament, cancel the election [held on December 30, 2018] and hold a neutral election under a neutral government. He said people know how to defeat such type of un-elected government.
Presided over by DAB president Harun Al Rashid, the discussion was also addressed by BNP vice-chairman AZM Zahid Hossain, DAB general secretary Md Abdus Salam and vice-president MA Selim, among others.
