FR Tower ACC arrests Tasvirul
The Anti-Corruption Commission on Sunday arrested Tasvir-ul-Islam, one of the owners of FR Tower at Banani in Dhaka, over his alleged involvement in expanding the building violating the approved design.
Irregularities in construction of FR Tower came to light after a devastating fire broke out in the high rise on March 28 that killed 27 people and injured many others.
The commission deputy director Abu Bakar Siddiqui arrested Tasvir, also managing director of Qusem Drycells Limited, at Segunbagicha in Dhaka, the commisison’s public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee told reporters.
Tasvir is also president of Kurigram district unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Earlier on July 29, the commission arrested former Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha assistant director Shah M Sadrul Alam on same charges.
On June 25, the ACC filed two corruption cases against 23 people including two former Rajuk chairmen, owners of FR Tower on charges of corruption for allowing the construction of additional floors to the building in two phases.
One of the two cases was filed by ACC accusing 20 people, including one of FR Tower owners Md Hossain Imam Faruque, Rupayan Housing Estate Limited chairman Liaquat Ali Khan Mukul, Qushem Drycells Limited managing director Tasvir-ul-Islam, on charges of constructing additional floors from 19 to 23 floors at FR tower, violating rules and selling the floors.
The other accused are former Rajuk chairman engineer KAM Harun, two of its former authorised officers Syed Nazmul Huda and Samsur Rahman, it former chief building inspector Mahbub Hossain Sarker, former building inspectors Aurangzeb Siddique and Nazrul Islam, former member Rezaul Karim Tarafdar, former director (estate) Shamsul Alam, former deputy director Shawkat Ali, former assistant director Shah M Sadrul Alam, former coordinator Jahanara Begum, former inspector Mehiduzzman, two office assistants Mujibur Rahman Molla and Enamul Haque, former member IEM Gulam Kibria, former director Abdullah Al Baki, and coordinator Mofazzel Hossain.
The anti-graft body filed another case against five people including one of FR Tower owners MHI Faruque and Rupayun Housing chairman Liaquat Ali Khan Mukul for violating the building code during construction of the 15-storied building and adding additional floor from 15 to 18 floors falsifying the original design of the structure.
The others three accused were Rajuk former chairman Humayun Khadem, former chief engineer Saidur Rahman, and former authorised officer Syed Makbul Ahmed.
