Do not cross limit, IGP tells bloggers

Inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque on Sunday said free-thinking writers and bloggers should not ‘cross the limit of tolerance’ while expressing views and criticising religion.
He said police would take legal action if anyone files a case when they are hurt by such write-ups.
The police chief was addressing a press briefing at police headquarters on Sunday about the law and order situation of the country.
‘According to penal code and information and communication technology act, one might serve 14 years imprisonment for hurting religious sentiments,’ said the IGP.
‘If anyone gets hurt due to such write-ups, we ask them to file a case. We will arrest the accused and start legal proceeding,’ added the police chief.
Shahidul asked free-thinking writers and bloggers not to cross the limit that would endanger their own security.
He said that they were doing their best to bring the attackers to book.
Asked about police negligence in recording Niladri Chatterjee’s general dairy, the IGP said they were investigating it but were yet to confirm if the allegation was true.
The police chief said they have identified the murderers of blogger Avijit Roy, but their whereabouts remained untraced.
‘We are investigating and the FBI is assisting us through technological support,’ Shahidul said.
Top police officials were asked to join a meeting at the home ministry where the minister and cabinet members expressed their concern at the recent killing of bloggers and children.
Then, the police and other agencies met up at the headquarters.
After the meeting, Shahidul claimed they made significant progress in investigations of three recent child murders that shocked people around the country.
Charge-sheets in the case of Rajon killing in Sylhet, Rakib in Khulna and Robiul in Borguna will be submitted shortly, said the police chief.
The IGP further claimed they have had ‘remarkable’ success in investigating militancy cases. ‘632 cases were filed countrywide in militancy incidents since 2004, where police arrested 2,513 people and submitted charge-sheets in 516 case,’ said Shahidul
