WAR CRIMES : Verdict against Siraj, Akram today
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 would deliver today its verdict in the war crimes case of Sirajul Haque alias Siraj Master and Khan Akram Hossain of Bagerhat.
ICT-1 chairman, Justice M Enayetur Rahim announced the schedule on August 5 while dropping the case against the third accused t Abdul Latif Talukdar after he died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on July 28.
The ICT registrar Shahidul Alam Zinuk said that tight security would be in place when the verdict would be delivered.
On June 23, on completion of the trial the tribunal said that the verdict would be delivered later and set no schedules.
In 1971, Siraj was deputy commander of the Razakar militia in the then Bagerhat sub-division, Akram was commander of Daibagyahati Razakar camp at Morrelganj, Bagerhat and Latif was a member of the Razakar force, according to the prosecution.
On November 5, 2014, they were indicted on seven charges of crimes against humanity.
Only Siraj was tried on four charges, which includes killing over 600 people.
All the three were tried on the common charges of killing 47 people.
Khan Akram and Abdul Latif were tried on another charge for killing one more person.
During the trial, 32 prosecution witness testified against the accused while five witnesses gave evidence in favour of Akram and Latif.
None testified for Siraj.
This will be the 21st verdict in as many war crimes cases.
For the ICT-1 it would be the 10th verdict.
Until now, 22 war criminals, mostly Jamaat leaders, have been convicted.
